Michigan first issued Veteran license plates in 1935. A National Guard series was added in 1939. However, 1940 brought a new administration to the Secretary of State's office—and an end to many special series. From 1940 through 1978, Michigan offered no veteran-specific plates at all. Beginning in 1979, handicapped veterans were quietly acknowledged with wheelchair plates using the "V" letter series, but with no other distinguishing characteristics.
In 1984, Michigan introduced the Disabled Veteran, World War One Veteran, World War Two Veteran, Pearl Harbor Survivor, (Ex-)Prisoner of War, and Congressional Medal of Honor series.
The genre was broadened in 1993 to include all branches and eras of service, identified by text to the left of the serial number.
