Michigan specialty license plates fall into three categories: Fundraiser, Collegiate, and Organization.
Fundraiser and Collegiate plates are available to any motorist registering a passenger or light commercial vehicle, for an additional fee over normal registration costs. Proceeds from the additional fees are divided between the nonprofit cause (or university) depicted on the plate and the State of Michigan.
Organizational plates are available exclusively to members of the organization depicted on the plate, for an additional fee over normal registration costs. Proceeds from the additional fees are divided between the organization and the State of Michigan.
