Handicapped

Michigan first afforded parking privileges to physically-handicapped motorists in 1975. Originally, only three prefix letters were used: "H" for handicapped, "W" for people using wheelchairs, or "V" for handicapped veterans. For the 1984 base, the "H" and "W" distinctions were dropped, and the letter (moved to the suffix position) was merely serial. However, the suffix letter "V" was still reserved for veterans.
